FAQ

What exactly is AAA???

AAA is a service-learning program offered through the Honors College. It is a seminar class that is taken in the spring semester and culminates in a 10-14 days trip to do service work abroad.

When does the class meet???

There are going to be three separate sections of the class in Spring 2012. Each section will meet in a different room once a week on Wednesdays from 3:00-4:30pm.

Do I get class credit for AAA???

Absolutely! Alabama Action Abroad is a 3-hr UH humanities credit. If you're in IHP, it can count towards that too!

What do we do in AAA class???

It varies from week to week. Many weeks you will have a guest speaker come and present about different topics, such as teaching English as a second language, the history and culture of the country you are going to, global awareness, social issues,etc... Some weeks you will have a group project or a short essay due. This is a fun, laid-back and easy class!

Where is AAA going this year???

This year there will be three different trips: Costa Rica, Belize, and Ecuador. Each site will encompass something a little different. Costa Rica will be very rugged and involved backpacking into the mountains to work at an indigenous school teaching English. Belize will be more urban and will involved working at a literacy camp. Ecuador will be a combination of the two and will most likely involve some ESL teaching as well as construction and sustainability projects. Each of the three locations also involves a day or two of tourism.  For all three locations, you will be staying with a host family and have complete cultural immersion getting to live and each with the local people there.

What are the dates of the trips?

We will be carpooling from Tuscaloosa to Atlanta the Sunday after finals, May 6th, and spend the night in a hotel (included in cost of program) before flying to our respective countries the next day.  However, several students have chosen in the past to meet the rest of the group at the hotel in Atlanta instead of carpooling.  Each trip will last between 10 and 14 days.  We will then fly back into Atlanta where we will drive together back to Tuscaloosa that night.  Once again, several students chose to either drive straight home or to fly home out of the Atlanta airport as opposed to returning to Tuscaloosa.

Do I need to speak Spanish to go on these trips?

For Costa Rica and Ecuador, there is a pre-requisite/co-requisite of Spanish 102 or higher.  If you only took Spanish in high school, note this on the application and state what level you completed. For Belize, English is spoken there so you do not need any background experience with Spanish.

How much does AAA cost???

The trips each cost approximately $1700, which includes all airfare, lodging, all but one or two meals, and transportation. You can apply any study abroad scholarship to these trips, so make sure you check out IHP, the Honors College Newsletter, and Capstone International for scholarship opportunities!
